Leaf Home Predicts Trend in Home Water Filtration Systems

"The quality of water in the U.S. has never been worse," said Jon Bostock a former GE executive and current CEO of Leaf Home. "This summer, the U.S. Geological Survey found that nearly half of U.S. tap water contains 'forever chemicals' which can result in fertility issues, cancer, and developmental delays in children."

To combat harmful chemicals, Bostock predicts that Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems will surge in popularity this year and in the coming years.

Many popular refrigerator water filters, countertop water filter pitchers, and faucet filters rely on forms of carbon as the primary filtration method. These types of carbon filters don't protect against all forever chemicals. A reverse osmosis system not only helps deliver cleaner water, but a whole house water filter system allows you to improve water conditions at all taps. Homeowners often look to a whole-house water filtration system to treat incoming water for drinking, cooking, and bathing, and to protect the home from bacteria and viruses.

What are reverse osmosis water filtration systems?

A reverse osmosis water treatment system removes harmful contaminants in water. With the force of water pressure, the system pushes tap water through a semi-permeable membrane, effectively eliminating up to 99% of contaminants. The clean water is held in a storage tank for future use, and contaminants are sent down the drain so you never come in contact with them. If your home uses private well water, or city water, or you've struggled with getting quality water in your home, this high-end water filtration system offers both convenience and peace of mind.

Systems for an individual sink start around $250, but a whole-house water filter can range upwards of $5,000. If you need a water softener applied at the main water line, the cost can exceed $10,000.

Pros and Cons

  1. Filters 99% of contaminants including lead, fluoride, dissolved salts, and chlorine from water. Boiling water only eliminates bacteria.

  2. Better drinking water. You'll save money on bottled water.

  3. Cooking with filtered water helps food taste better

  4. Helps sensitive skin

  5. Eliminates the smelly sulfur water smell and its bad taste

  6. Healthy water results in healthy kidneys

  7. Eliminates hard water stains by delivering soft water

  8. Your home must have good water pressure for it to work well. Most homeowners report a minimal impact on water flow, but some do suggest a periodic drop in water pressure.

  9. Increases household water waste

  10. Produces a slightly more acidic water with a lower pH levels. Some individuals attribute this to heartburn and acid reflux

  11. Costly installation and micron sediment filter replacement
