How Law Roach Conquers Grammys Weekend

If "booked and busy" were a human being, it would be Law Roach during awards season. The image architect is one of Hollywood's most in-demand stylists, known for dressing A-list clients like Zendaya, Halsey, and Priyanka Chopra in showstopping red carpet looks. The work calls for a great deal of preparation, he says—and just as much flexibility.

"There is no secret [to staying organized]," Roach tells BAZAAR.com ahead of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in Las Vegas. "In the world I live in, things come up and change at the last minute, and the difference between good and great are the people who can adapt. Weekends like the Grammys are non-stop. My goal for every red carpet is to make the experience as effortless as possible for my clients to ensure they’re feeling confident. This means my team and I are doing a ton of coordinating on their behalf. It involves a lot of heavy lifting and lugging couture and shoe options, which is not nearly as glamorous as most people think."

Roach's red carpet moments tend to be bold and expressive; he asks his stars to take risks, but never gives them more than they can carry off. Think Kerry Washington in a sweeping, sunflower-yellow ball gown, Hunter Schaefer in a cropped blue Miu Miu set and thigh-high boots, or pretty much anything Zendaya wore on her Dune press tour.

"There's no reward without taking risks. When styling for the Grammys or any red carpet, my goal is to create moments that align with my client’s personal style and feel authentic to them," he says. "The outfit is not just something that they put on their body; it is a part of their story of the night."

Figuring out which story to tell often involves looking into the past for inspiration. Fashion lovers on social media like to say that "nobody knows their way around an archive like Law Roach" — proven last year when Zendaya shut down the Euphoria season 2 premiere in a vintage Valentino number, originally worn on the runway by Linda Evangelista in 1992. But Roach also considers the present: "We look at their current body of work and what brings them to the event," says Roach. "I am an Image Architect, and I start with a blueprint that guides our styling choices. I love a reference and you can see that throughout my styling."

Roach is known for his meticulous approach to work, but what happens when the party is over? While his career requires him to spend weeks away from home at a time, he still aims to prioritize time for himself when he can—whether at home or at the after-party. "My go-to drink is a Grey Goose martini with lychee, which I love drinking out of vintage martini glasses," he says. "For Grammys weekend specifically, I’ll be toasting with the cocktail I created in collaboration with Grey Goose, 'The Law,' which is my own twist on the classic martini, made just a little sweeter with lychee and rosewater. I think that true style extends beyond just what you wear and can take many forms, from how you carry yourself to the music you listen to and even the cocktail you drink."
