‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Mariska Hargitay Opens Up About Turning 60

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay opened up about aging and turning 60.
“I’m so proud of it and I’m grateful,” Hargitay said of the milestone.
The star said she feels “strong and fearless.”
Over the last 25 years, Mariska Hargitay has become nearly synonymous with her strong, confident character Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU. And while a lot has changed for the star over the years, it seems she’s viewing it as for the better. In a recent interview with People, Hargitay opened up about aging and feeling confident ahead of her 60th birthday.
The star will enter her next decade on January 23rd and is excited about the milestone. “I’m so proud of it and I’m grateful,” she told People of turning 60. “I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.”
The star also opened up about how she’s grown over the years, both off-screen and on-screen as Olivia Benson. The star explained in the interview that when she was first cast to play the role it took time to become “comfortable with the character,” but when she did “you saw this powerful woman emerge.”
Hargitay added: “That was powerful and exciting and beautifully uncomfortable to reckon with one’s own power.”
The actress says she feels she’s “been on a parallel journey” with her character, Olivia. “There’s a thing ‘WWOBD,’ what would Olivia Benson do? The fans would always talk about it, and one day it hit me,” she explained. “I also have those moments where I’ve sort of slipped into her. If there’s a crisis, I just take over and lead like that. Being strong and fearless. It’s sort of this perfect feminist story.”
And Hargitay has “so much to look forward to,” she said. “And I’m still growing. I like that you can be so many things at one time. It’s learning to give yourself permission to be all of yourself.”
If her growth over the years has taught her anything, it would be to “lead with [her] heart.” Hargitay explained that she has a “superpower,” which is being “vulnerable” with herself and others. “I’m somebody who understands you can be vulnerable and a badass at the same time.”
Hargitay is an inspiration to all her fans, whether she’s playing her iconic Law & Order: SVU role or simply being herself. We are so excited for the star as she approaches this powerful milestone, and can’t wait to see what the next decade holds.
