Fans of Law & Order: SVU, it feels like forever since another season came and went. While there are never enough episodes to watch these days, we're happy to report that Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her trusted team will be back on NBC before you know it. The best part is there are a lot more surprises in store.

Here are all the details you need to know about Law & Order: SVU season 24:

Will there be a season 24 of Law & Order: SVU?

Prepare to set aside an hour of your time, because Law & Order: SVU will kick off its 24th season starting September 22 at 9 p.m. ET. NBC officially dropped the news in late June. The show will share Thursday nights with fellow franchise shows, including the Law & Order reboot and season 3 of Law & Order: Organized Crime. Once Law and Order: SVU season 24 premieres, viewers can expect new episodes to air until mid-to late May 2023.

Fans may remember, creator and writer Dick Wolf worked his magic a few years ago and locked in a historic renewal deal with NBCUniversal, which means Law and Order: SVU is guaranteed through season 24.

Will Mariska Hargitay be in Law & Order: SVU season 24?

All signs are pointing to Mariska staying on as the one and only Benson. Although Deadline previously reported that the actress signs her contract on a yearly basis, there shouldn’t be concerns about Mariska not returning.

That said, there is one significant change happening behind the scenes at the longtime procedural drama. Back in May, Law and Order: SVU showrunner Warren Leight revealed that he is leaving the franchise and TV altogether, at least for a little while. He first joined the show in 2011 for season 13 and exited in 2016 after season 17 ended. He then came back for season 21 in 2019, and now he’s ready to take a step back for personal reasons.

“The final day of shooting is always bittersweet. Today was a little more than that,” he tweeted. “As some of you have already figured out, I am stepping down at the end of #SVU23. The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break.”

It’s tough to say how exactly this will impact Law and Order: SVU. But here’s hoping the series keeps serving up compelling cases and storylines.

Who is in the Law and Order: SVU season 24 cast?

Based on what we know right now, we predict the cast members below will continue starring in Law and Order: SVU season 24:

  • Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson

  • Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins

  • Ice-T as Odafin Tutuola

  • Peter Scanavino as Dominick Carisi, Jr.

  • Jamie Gray Hyder as Katriona Tamin

  • Demore Barnes as Christian Garland

  • Octavio Pisano as Joe Velasco

While most of the Law and Order: SVU cast is confirmed for season 24, one actress will be making her exit from the show. In August, Kelli Giddish announced she will be leaving the crime drama after portraying Amanda Rollins for more than a decade.

"I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on ‘Law & Order: SVU,’" she wrote on Instagram. "Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life."

Following fans' backlash about the decision, new showrunner David Graziano addressed the matter in Kelli's Instagram comments section.

“You might take a moment to entertain the idea that things are more complex than they appear in a world of emojis and tweets,” he wrote. “All I’ll say is Kelli has handled this with the most incredibly classy comportment. She is, without a doubt, one of the finest industry professionals I’ve come across in my 24 years of writing for television. I’m saddened by her looming exit. It’ll be my lucky day if I ever get to write for her again.”

According to Variety, Kelli didn't make the decision to leave. According to the outlet, it was “a call made from above” to “keep the show as up to date and current as possible.”

Are there major spoilers for Law & Order: SVU season 24?

While there aren't any details out about what viewers can expect from SVU, many will be thrilled to know that a major crossover is in the works between all three Law & Order shows. As for when fans may be able to expect it, folks can tune in on September 22 from 8 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET.

Per Deadline, viewers will see Detective Frank Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan), Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks), Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston), ADA Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) and more will come together to solve a string of cases tied by the mysterious shooting of a young girl. As the group soon realizes though, this jam-packed case concerns more than one death. It seems like there will be unforeseen complications.
