How Laverne Cox used makeup to 'announce to the world' who she 'really' is

Whether through her viral hashtag movement #TransIsBeautiful or lectures at college campuses across the U.S., Laverne Cox uses every platform she can to support and uplift the LGBTQ community. She also isn’t afraid to speak on the transformative power of makeup.

The actress and activist shared why “makeup has never been a superficial thing” to her during a recent appearance on the BUILD Series in New York City to promote Lifetime’s new beauty competition series, Glam Masters.

She explained: “I started wearing makeup in high school. It was a way for me to announce to the world that I wasn’t who they thought I was. This is really who I am.”

While some people may see highlighting powder, eyeliner, and false lashes as just makeup, Cox has always used these products as tools for “self-expression.” She said, “It’s been about integrating my insides and outsides.”

Fast-forward years later, and Cox is continuously serving aspirational beauty looks (many perfected by makeup artist Deja Smith) that prove she has stepped into her true self.

Keep slaying in that red lipstick, Laverne!
