  • Lauren Hutton criticized our cultural “obsession with youth” in a new interview.

  • The 78-year-old model didn’t hold back about getting older and the way society views aging women.

  • “I think it’s time to realize that anti-aging is an old-fashioned term,” she said.

A former supermodel who dares to age naturally, Lauren Hutton is a rare gem speaking up against current beauty standards that, somehow, continue to creep further out of reach. At 78, she has experienced her fair share of pressured expectations, especially in her job. But to not age, in her opinion, is to not live. “I think it’s time to realize that anti-aging is an old-fashioned term,” she recently told Byrdie.

She continued: “There’s a lot of research that shows that our attitudes have so much to do with how we age, so instead of worrying about this wrinkle or that spot, we should all be focused on taking good care of our skin and ourselves.”

And she’s not wrong in her research claims. A February study published in JAMA Network Open found that the people who had a positive attitude about aging had a 43% lower risk of dying from any cause over a four-year period compared with those who were the least satisfied.

The study also found that people more satisfied with aging had a lower risk for conditions like diabetes, stroke, cancer, and heart disease; had better cognitive functioning; were more likely to exercise and have good sleep; and were less lonely and depressed with a more optimistic, greater sense of purpose.

She went on to say the term “anti-aging,” especially as it’s used in skincare and wellness marketing, “never made sense to me.” We’re inclined to agree.

“Whether it’s beauty or fashion, there’s an obsession with youth. But if we’re lucky, we’re all going to get old,” she added.

Amid swirls of messaging that tells us to smooth this and lift that, Hutton’s perspective is welcome and refreshing. But it’s not new. Earlier this year, she told Harper’s Bazaar that she once told a photographer she’s “not going to try and look younger.” She also told People in 2019 that she tried Botox, but didn’t like it.

“I jumped back when I saw myself because I had an eyebrow that looked like the Wicked Witch,” she recalled. “I’ve let go that I look like a miniature Shar-Pei. The wrinkles are going to be there and they really are the badges of your life.”
