'Well that wasn’t subtle…'

Laura Dern may have already perfected her acting skills, but it appears she hasn't yet mastered the art of subtly.

The Jurassic Park actress tried her best to drop hints for Courteney Cox regarding the leading role in the Friends alum's upcoming directorial film—though Dern may not have been as discreet as she intended.

In a comical new Instagram clip shared by Cox, the two women put on an amusing display as Dern, 56, shoots her shot, trying to prove to Cox, 58, that the perfect candidate for the role is right in front of her.

While the Scream star is working on casting for her film, Dern approaches her to ask about the lead female role, which Cox says is a character who is "a genius, incredibly smart, and a charming person and then she turns into this murderer."

Noting the complex nature of the story arc, Dern then noted that "few actors" could handle such a role, while also suggesting it should be played by someone around her own age.

Cox also insisted that the character is brunette, which a very blonde-headed Dern says is "like nothing...we wear a wig we do whatever." She also insisted that she is available for work right now—not obvious at all!

It wasn't until Cox revealed that the potential actress would have to shave her eyebrows, which made the Big Little Lies actress suddenly start to rethink her pitch.

"I realize I'm not available," she stated, prompting Cox to get a little offended that her friend wouldn't be willing to do anything for the role. "I thought you'd go further for your craft, but whatever," Cox jokingly jabbed.

"Well that wasn’t subtle…" Cox captioned the sarcastic Instagram video, which even some of their celebrity pals couldn't help but giggle at.

"😂😂😂" commented Zooey Deschanel, while Julianne Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer also added the same emoji under Sunday's post.

"I’ll shave my eyebrows?" Pfeiffer also offered.

"I can pick up the pieces here and cast her as my neighbor," Chelsea Handler quipped.

"Hahahahahahhaaha" added Poppy Delevine.

But it's not the first time these ladies have pulled this stunt, as they previously posted a similar video skit, except the roles were reversed and Cox was the one trying to give a subtle audition.

"Ummm… I’m right here!" Cox joked in the caption of the hilarious Instagram post, shared back in September 2022.
