In the words of the season’s wisest woman, “It’s tiiiiiiime!”. That’s right, Mariah Carey has thawed and it’s time for us to break out this years’ roundup of the best funny Christmas movies to watch in 2023.

Leading up to Christmas, we’re always romanticizing the season: hot chocolate by the fireplace, the smell of freshly baked cookies, beautifully wrapped presents under the tree… and then this time of year actually hits. Suddenly, work deadlines are INSANE, there’s never enough wrapping paper, every flight is delayed, your brother isn’t talking to your parents, and OMG you forgot to buy a present for your baby niece! Okay yeah, that’s more like it when they say ‘tis the season.

Luckily, there’s nothing like a funny Christmas movies to make you feel better about your own holiday woes! Since laughter is the best medicine, we all need to find the time to sit down and crack up at Kevin McAllister outsmarting two adult men (Home Alone, 1990) or Ryan Reynolds singing Broadway-style (Spirited, 2022). Our list spans not only decades, but also the genres—from family fun, slapstick humor, romantic comedies, adult humor, all the way to vintage tomfoolery—meaning there is something for everyone. Even those holiday scrooges walking around muttering, “Bah humbug!” will crack a smile when you turn on any of these joyful flicks.

So, whatever it is that makes you laugh, we can bet one of these 60 movies will make you big belly chuckle like Santa himself, helping to relieve all your seasonal stresses.

Elf (2003)

It’s a classic for a reason, right? Will Ferrell running around New York City in tights will always inspire a giggle. Elf strikes the perfect balance between heartwarming and humorous that we so often crave this time of year. Buddy the Elf (Ferrell), who embarks on a quest to NYC in hopes of finding his real dad, using his Christmas spirit to spread joy along the way. It’s fun for the whole family and a true modern holiday comedy classic.

Home Alone (1990)

We’ve all forgotten to pack something when traveling for the holidays right? Well, has it ever been something as important as one of your children? Hopefully the answer is no so you can laugh at the insanity of 8-year-old Kevin McAllister (Macauley Culkin) being left home alone by his family over Christmas. His resourcefulness helps him defend his home from Christmas criminals, resulting in some classic slapstick comedy. If you enjoy watching people sustain injuries over and over again that should surely send them to the hospital, or just getting to witness a family more chaotic than yours, then this movie’s for you.

Spirited (2022)

One of the newer films on this list, but quickly becoming a beloved modern holiday movie, Spirited follows the current Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) coming to haunt Clint (Ryan Reynolds). It’s a musical reimagining of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and the first musical extravaganza of Reynolds’ career. The film uses humor, heart, song, and dance to offer a contemporary twist on a cherished holiday tale that will leave you laughing and singing.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

When going through mail, does anyone else catch themselves randomly saying: “Jury duty, jury duty, jury duty, black mail, pink slip, chain letter, eviction notice, jury duty,” in Jim Carrey’s Grinch voice? No, just me? Okay, moving on. How The Grinch Stole Christmas may in fact be some of Jim Carrey’s best work, solely due to the fact that the CIA to taught him to endure torture because the prosthetic process of becoming The Grinch was so difficult (seriously, look it up!). But if you’re not here for the Jim Carrey-ness of it all, you’ll enjoy the heartwarming tale of redemption as the Grinch’s heart grows in size. And yes, that is Jenny from Gossip Girl as Cindy Lou Who (aka Taylor Momsen).

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

Apparently the 80’s and 90’s were filled with people laughing over other people’s pain, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is no different. This film thrives on slapstick comedy as we see Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) attempt to deliver a perfect Christmas for his family, but often finding himself in the middle of disaster, chaos, and painful situations. This was always the movie my middle school art teacher would put on leading up to the holidays and I really believe that means it stands the test of time. A Christmas Story is the timeless comedy about Young Ralphie and his quest for the ultimate Christmas gift: the Red Ryder BB Gun. We all know the iconic leg lamp, the bunny suit, and the perfect scene of a tongue getting stuck to a frozen pole. So don’t skip this 80’s classic that’s fun for the whole family!

Gremlins (1984)

Have you ever been gifted a Christmas present with the terms: never get it wet, no bright lights, and don't feed it after midnight? Hopefully not because if so, your Christmas holiday was probably mischievous, chaotic, and gory. Gremlins is an 80’s classic that blends horror and dark comedy together so perfectly that it deserves a watch any time of year, not just during the holiday season. Happiest Season (2020)

It’s a very merry queer Christmas after all! A first of its kind romantic comedy, Happiest Season features Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in love. Harper (Davis) convinces Abby (Stewart) to come home with her for the holidays, but with the caveat that Abby must pretend to be her roommate so Harper can keep up the charade with her family that she’s straight. Fun fact: This is actually the first ever animated Christmas special produced for television. Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol is a timeless animated comedy that puts a comical and musical spin on Charles Dickens' classic tale. Voiced by Jim Backus, the nearsighted Mr. Magoo takes on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, with ghosts helping him to learn the true meaning of Christmas.
