The Latest on Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2: What to Know About the Future of the Disney+ Series

Ben Kenobi will return ... in A New Hope, but we're still holding out hope for a second season of the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor reprised his role as the legendary Jedi Master for the show from Lucasfilm, which premiered on May 27, 2022.

The six-episode season came to an epic end on June 22, 2022, with (spoiler alert!) both young Luke and Leia safe at their respective homes, and Kenobi reuniting with his old master Qui-Gon Jinn (portrayed by Liam Neeson), who was killed in The Phantom Menace. Will we see them again in Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

Will there be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

Unfortunately, it seems as if there won't be a Season 2, at least not anytime soon. In an interview with Variety, Lucasfilm executive Kathleen Kennedy said “That is not an active development, but I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another."

While Obi-Wan Kenobi has been billed as a limited series, McGregor has expressed interest in a second season. “I really hope we do another,” he said in an interview with British GQ. “If I could do one of these every now and again – I’d just be happy about it.”

Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, would also "be open to" appearing in another season. "Well, it was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character," he admitted to RadioTimes.com. "You know, I think there's certainly more there to explore and I would be so excited to get to do so."

Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow has given us some hope, saying there are "more stories" that could be told. "You know, we always did conceive of this as a limited series," Chow told RadioTimes.com. "So it's not an adventure-of-the-week sort of story. It's one big story with a beginning, middle and end. So I think this story was very much conceived to be its own standalone."

The director added, "I mean, there are of course more stories that you could tell. There's obviously another 10 years before we get to A New Hope and with a character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, I think even just watching him ride across the sand sometimes is interesting. So, who knows? It's hard to say right now, but it was not the intention."
