Las Vegas Skiers Experience First Powder Day Of The Season

Lee Canyon, a Las Vegas, Nevada, area ski resort, just experienced its first powder day of the season yesterday.

Thanks to 16 inches of fresh snowfall the previous day, Lee Canyon opened its Bluebird Chair on Thursday.

After a bit of a slow start, Lee Canyon now has two lifts open: Bluebird and Rabbit Peak.

Over the summer, in August, Lee Canyon was impacted by severe flooding during Hurricane Hilary. The flooding forced the resort to suspend summer operations and called the viability of the upcoming winter season into question.

Lee Canyon wasn't fazed by the storm, though, and quickly initiated a recovery effort that, according to Fox 5 News, involved 240 dump truck loads of dirt kicked up by flood waters. In October, Lee Canyon told Fox 5 News that the storm wouldn't impact its planned operation schedule.

Then, as is the case at several ski resorts throughout North America, low seasonal snowfall became the problem. On a December 8th Instagram post from Lee Canyon showing off its new Ponderosa quad chairlift, one local skier wrote, "From the looks of the snow, doesn't seem like the first spin will happen until next season."

While the Ponderosa has yet to spin this winter, Lee Canyon, as noted before, is open for business. What's the saying? The sky's the limit? Here's to 2024 bringing more of the white stuff.
