Elmo appeared on The Today Show alongside his father this morning to discuss his recent viral fame following a controversial Tweet. But the segment quickly devolved into violence when Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David crashed the interview. He was appearing after Elmo to promote the 12th, and supposedly final, season of the HBO series.

Earlier this week, Elmo initiated one of the largest mass trauma dumps the internet has seen when he Tweeted, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” Decidedly unwell, it turned out, teaching the furry red friend an important lesson. “Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing,” he said in a follow-up statement.

David didn’t weigh in on the post, but it seems he’s battling some self-esteem issues, as well. At the end of the segment, just as Al Roker was about to give the weather, David stormed the Today Show stage. Grabbing Elmo by the face, the Seinfeld creator shook the young puppet vigorously while taking a rather feeble swipe at his father.

David then retreated to the opposite end of the stage, where he was seen perched on a chair and grinning in the fallout of his brutal attack.

“Mr. Larry, Elmo liked you before!” the bruised puppet called out, before offering an olive branch to the comedian. “Sit down on the couch and let’s talk about how you’re feeling,” he pleaded.

During his segment, when asked to apologize to Elmo “from your heart,” David quipped, “From where? What organ are you talking about?” However, the funnyman did offer a solemn mea culpa. “Elmo, I just want to apologize,” David said. “I’m really sorry.”

“I want to accept your apology, Larry,” Elmo said magnanimously.

David is perhaps upset after losing “a lot of money” over his appearance in an infamous 2022 FTX Super Bowl ad. At Curb’s premiere on Tuesday, David called himself “an idiot” for agreeing to appear in the spot. It resulted in him being named in a class action lawsuit, along with other FTX partners Steph Curry, Tom Brady, and Gisele Bündchen.

“Part of my salary was in crypto, so I lost a lot of money,” David griped.

Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm premieres on February 4. You can catch it on HBO, or in the Max app.
