With some work-from-home mandates extending through the end of 2020, many folks are trying to make at-home workspaces more comfortable. One of the most common approaches is through the introduction of standing desks.
Previously reserved for major office spaces, standing desks have now become a work-from-home essential. They’re great for those who spend hours in front of a screen and want to keep their leg muscles active. But with some standard standing desks retailing for $270 and up, and stand-up desk converters costing around $180 or more, many are seeking ways to reap the benefits of these products without breaking the bank.

Sitting for extended periods of time has been a common practice in American culture for decades. According to the National Institutes of Heath (NIH), the average American aged 12 and up logs between eight to 10 hours waking hours per day sitting or doing other things that require very little energy. The NIH added that the older you get, the more likely you are to sit.
“For people who work sitting down all day, it’s recommended that they stand up, walk around and stretch every 30 to 40 minutes,” Labross Sidossis, Ph.D., chair of the department of kinesiology and health in the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, tells Forbes.
But Dr. Sidossis said the sad reality is that “plenty of people don’t do that.” The next best option is “standing while you work,” as “it breaks up this continuous sitting down, which is not good for your health.”
In addition to assisting in muscle health and regulation, standing while you work can aid in posture correction.
“A standing desk is also a good option as it will help you become more aware of your posture and engage your core muscles,” Noam Tamir, C.S.C.S., founder of TS Fitness in New York City, tells Self.
“I’ve been reading about the benefits of a standing desk for people who spend a lot of time sitting at a computer at work,” one five-star reviewer wrote. “I wanted to give it a try, so I bought this tray to raise my keyboard. It works perfectly.”
The same shopper added that she can “easily change from sitting to standing” throughout the work day, adding that it’s a “perfect and cheap solution for a standing work station.”
One of the only cons shoppers expressed is the attached mouse pad “isn’t super strong.” While one reviewer said it’s not weak enough “not use,” added it would help if it was sturdier. The same shopper still gave the product an overall rating of five stars for its strong legs, strong pivots that lock into position and lightweight build.
