Following a super-limited edition collaboration featuring hand-dyed indigo Asics sneakers earlier this year, Lapstone & Hammer is teaming up with the Japanese brand to add three more colorways.
The Lapstone & Hammer x Asics Gel-Kayano 14 “Dip-Dye” collection features four different color options for the handmade process. “Indigo” makes its return alongside “Coffee,” “Matcha” and purple “Ube” editions of the trending model. After receiving feedback, the Philadelphia-based boutique has also extended the run to include women’s sizes.
Lapstone & Hammer chose the three new colorways to represent different caffeinated beverages drank in the morning across the world. In a blog post for the collection, the boutique says, “Much like our custom Dip Dye process, the manner in which people prepare these drinks is unique and individualized, a way in which we put our own personal stamp on this communal act.”
L&H also called out the Gel-Kayano 14’s popularity in Philadelphia as a reason for the model taking the spotlight.
Because of the nature of dip-dying, no two sneakers that will release will be alike. Lapstone & Hammer says it had to change the process used for the Gel-NYC and Gel-1130 sneakers from January because of the Gel-Kayano 14’s unique construction of suede and mesh. Subtle differences between the men’s and women’s variants has also led to the dye appearing darker on the former than the latter.
All four colorways of the Lapstone & Hammer x Asics Gel-Kayano 14 “Dip-Dye” will release Saturday, May 18, through the boutique’s Philadelphia store. Any pairs still remaining at noon will then go on sale through Lapstone & Hammer’s website. Pricing for each sneaker is set at $200. All four colorways will be available in men’s sizes 5 to 13, with the exception of “Matcha” which starts at size 7. “Matcha” and “Ube” will then be available in women’s sizes 6 through 10.5, while “Indigo” runs from 5 to 11.
