Lana Condor Says She Only Wore Eyelashes And Lip Balm While Filming "To All the Boys"

Lara Jean Covey and Lana Condor, the actress that played her, are synonymous in the eyes of many–probably, because in real life, Lana exudes that same Lara Jean bubbliness that makes the character so watchable.
Living out my fangirl dream, I talked with Lana live on Zoom. The bright-eyed smile so familiar to any To All the Boys fan never left her face as Lana told me all about her skincare tricks (one requires a hot bubble bath), her worst beauty mistakes (black eyeliner with no eyebrows), and the future of Lara Jean and Peter (hint: it involves The Notebook).
17: You are always just glowing–all the time, it’s unreal. So I wanted to know what your number one secret is for keeping your skin clear.
LANA CONDOR: I have many things that I do to keep my skin clear, so picking one is tough, but I will say to do a nighttime hot bath. It works for me ... I do a bath every night–and when I tell you I do a bath every night, every single night–when I wake up my skin feels really plump and radiant. I feel like all the sweat from the hot bath kind of releases all the toxins. A hot, hot bath that helps you kind of sweat it out really makes a difference, I’ve found.
17: What skincare tips would you give to yourself at 17? Because personally, my skincare, my makeup was a disaster.
LC: Oh my god me too. I remember at 17–well a lot of my teens, but at 17–I would wear like heavy black eyeliner and like bright red lips with no foundation, no eyes, no brows, no nothing, just the eyeliner and the red lip on a school day. And I’m like, what was I doing? Tips that I would give 17-year-old Lana would be definitely to wear sunscreen religiously, even if it's not convenient. Because I know that oftentimes sunscreen can kind of come off and you have to reapply it throughout the day and it's kind of a mission–so I would say, find a great spray sunscreen that you can easily apply throughout the day and put that into your skincare routine, because we have to protect our skin from the sun as young as possible. I wish that I would have known to invest in a great, great sunscreen. Neutrogena has their Ultra Sheer Spray that's really, really great. And I think probably using hyaluronic acid. I learned about hyaluronic acid really when I started acting, I think, and I started really being more concerned about my skin–just because with any of the freakin’ cameras that're in your face, you can see everything. All the HD and blabity, blah, blah—you see every pore! So I think hyaluronic acid is an incredible product and I probably would have wished I had that when I was a teenager for sure, because it really helps plump your skin, really helps clean and nourish, and not strip away, but hydrate and keep you really glowy. Neutrogena also has a really great hyaluronic acid serum—it's their Hydro Boost Glow Serum. Honestly, I’ll wear it without any foundation and it kind of just illuminates the skin.
17: Of all three movies, if you had to pick one single Lara Jean beauty moment, what would it be?
LC: I really liked in the sequel when she was dressed up for the dance at the nursing home. I loved that look, because I feel like Lara Jean’s look day to day is really pretty natural. Like on the first movie, I truly wore no makeup except for lashes and like a colored lip balm. So, it was really nice for that ball scene in the second movie to kind of add a red lip, we added a really lovely, beautiful eye, got to like do my hair in a different way. Because in a way that scene for me was like seeing Lara Jean as, like, truly a young woman and not just how we’re used to seeing her.
That leads me nicely into my next question: is there a signature red lipstick you wore every time?
LC: You know, I think if my memory serves me–I know we used quite a bit of Koh Gen Do. We used quite a bit of their products on the show, I don’t remember if that’s the one we used. I’m not sure but if I were to guess, I’d say Koh Gen Do or Shiseido.
17: Okay, I need to circle back quickly. Did you really not wear any makeup in the first movies other than lashes and lip?
LC: Lashes, I had a thin, like, colored lip balm, and ... I get like a bald spot [on my eyebrow], they might have filled it in. But if you go and you watch it, you will see that I am bare-faced. And I remember being like "Can we put some makeup on my face–just a little?" And I remember it was very important for them to just strip it down. And I remember, because of that, [for movies] two and three I was excited, because as [Lara Jean] got older she kind of added little things into her look, which I enjoyed. The first movie when I see it back, I’m going woah, there’s nothing there.
17: In other interviews, you've spoken about the To All the Boys spin-off that’s coming up and how you might potentially be involved in it and you forecast that Lara Jean and Peter might breakup in college and then get back together later on in life. I wondered why you had that idea?
LC: Well, that idea was sort of based off of my fantasy of what I think when people ask me. My number one question I think is: "Oh, do you think they’ll make it through college?" And I always say no, because–and I think that they're endgame and they find each other, like, as proper adults–but I think in college they’re really gonna want to learn about themselves as individuals. They are so far apart, but I think they’re really gonna want to like–they have to grow separately … and then I do believe they’ll come back together. But that’s really a fantasy of mine that I’m trying to push to the public so that it could happen. We’ll see if it does, but yeah that’s how I see their immediate future at least.
17: Let's keep our fingers crossed for a To All the Boys 4 that takes place 20 years in the future, like The Notebook.
LC: Yes, exactly!
