Prince William has arrived in Singapore as the country prepares to host the third annual Earthshot Prize awards, which will take place on Tuesday, November 7. And as celebrities and changemakers prepare to join him on the green carpet to celebrate this year’s five winners, actor Lara Condor has shared her thoughts with T&C about being involved.

“I am incredibly grateful and honored to be able to bring attention and awareness to the inspiring group of finalists who have made it their mission to provide innovative solutions for the repair and regeneration of our planet,” Condor wrote over e-mail. “I was really excited to get the opportunity to learn and be in the company of changemakers actively involved in various conservation efforts.”

Condor will announce one of the five winners of the evening alongside the Prince, actor Cate Blanchet, wildlife conservationist Robin Irwin and humanitarian Nomzamo Mbatha. The event will be hosted by Emmy Award winners Hannah Waddingham and Sterling K. Brown. Each winner will receive £1 million to help scale up their innovation and all 15 finalists will benefit from ongoing support from the Earthshot Prize and the connections and profile that the organization can bring.

Having shot to fame through her roles in films such as X-Men: Apocalypse and To All The Boys I've Loved Before, 26-year-old Condor has also launched a YouTube channel and has a following of more than 10 million on Instagram. Between her posts about her life and acting work, there are also videos showing a trip to the Annamite mountain range in Southeast Asia, where she highlighted efforts there to protect and restore the area. “To put it simply, preserving our planet ensures a sustainable future for not just ourselves, but for generations to come,” Condor told T&C about her motivation for using her platform in this way. “It is our responsibility to be good stewards of our home.”

Condor will join stars on the green carpet tomorrow night at the Theatre at Mediacorp where every aspect of the Earthshot Prize awards will have sustainability in mind. Last year in Boston, Kate Middleton wore a green rented dress in a reminder that fashion has a unique role to play in encouraging sustainability. “I am so lucky to be dressed by Stella McCartney, a British fashion designer known for her sustainable and cruelty free approach to fashion,” Lana shared about her plans for her outfit. “Fashion can play a crucial role in encouraging sustainability…Sustainable fashion practices, such as using eco-friendly materials and ethical manufacturing, can help reduce the industry’s environmental footprint as well as serve up some looks.”

Prince William has said today that he is “delighted” to be back in Singapore 11 years since he and Kate made an official visit there in 2012 on behalf of Queen Elizabeth. “And I should mention that Catherine is very sorry she can’t be here, she is helping George through his first set of major exams,” the Prince said in a speech at the United for Wildlife Global Summit, which is also being held in Singapore this week. On arrival into the county on Sunday, he visited the world’s largest indoor waterfall at Changi Airport. Other events on the itinerary include joining a training session with a British dragon boat racing team.

“The focus of my visit this week is how we collectively overcome our planet’s greatest environmental challenges,” the Prince of Wales said. William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020, with the first event being held in 2021. Each year, five winners are selected meaning that over 10 years 50 solutions for restoring and protecting our environment will be funded and supported. This year’s finalists include a company making sustainable dyes and a business creating sustainable tires for electric vehicles.
