It’s been a rough Championship Tour season for Lakey Peterson. After the Margaret River Pro, the Santa Barbara surfer found herself on the wrong side of the mid-season cut line, staring right down the barrel at fighting her way back up through the Challenger Series. However, salvation came in the form of a season wildcard for the 2025 CT.

In her latest YouTube video, Lakey posted some behind the scenes footage of the leadup to Margies, the competition itself, and the aftermath. Along with edits of her (still phenomenal) surfing, she provided a candid analysis of what went into a season that tested her both in and out of the water.

“In all honestly, this year has felt really tricky for me,” she narrated. “Outside of a jersey, I feel like I’m surfing the best that I ever have. My body feels great, my boards are great. Inside the contests, it just has not been reflecting that at all. I’ve felt I’ve had a few close calls that didn’t go my way and could have. Honestly, the conditions this year have just been really tricky at every single venue. That being said, I completely own the fact that I haven’t been getting the results and that’s on me. I’m looking forward to improving.”

Margaret River had provided a glimmer of hope for Peterson, who was right on the edge of the cut line going into the event. As we all now know, she ultimately finished 11th and missed her shot. “It’s been quite an eye-opening experience for me and obviously a huge bummer,” she explained. “I’m really thankful to have received the wildcard for next season in 2025. I’m taking the time to really reflect and work on my surfing and come back the best version of myself that I’ve ever been. I truly believe that I still can win events and world titles and I’m gonna do everything in my power to do that.”
