The Los Angeles Lakers are investigating allegations that All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins threatened his ex-girlfriend’s life if she did not allow their 7-year-old son to attend his wedding to Morgan Lang this past weekend, according to multiple reports.

“We are aware of the allegation involving DeMarcus Cousins and, of course, take this claim seriously,” the Lakers said in a statement, via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “We are in the process of gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time.”

NBA spokesman Mike Bass said that the league is looking into the report.

“We are aware of the report regarding DeMarcus Cousins and are investigating the allegations."

TMZ Sports reportedly obtained court documents and a police report filed by Christy West alleging that Cousins threatened her on Friday, the day prior to his wedding. TMZ Sports also published audio of what West says is the alleged threat.

The alleged exchange in question:

Cousins: “I’m gonna ask you this one more time before I take it to another level: Can I have my son here?”

West: “Go shoot the ball.”

Cousins: “Can I have my son here, please?”

West: “No, he’s not coming.”

Cousins: “I’m gonna make sure I put a bullet through your f---ing head.”

Regardless of whether Cousins was being literal with West, the NBA is expected to join the Lakers in taking this claim seriously. The audio recording is eerily similar to that of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was caught on tape in April telling his son’s mother, “You need to be terrified of me, too, b----.” Hill was not suspended by the NFL. It is hard to believe the NBA would take the same tact if the league confirms that Cousins was the voice on the recording posted by TMZ.

Cousins signed a one-year deal with the Lakers in July. He tore his ACL during a workout earlier this month and is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season.
