Lake Louise's Long-Standing World Cup Races Cancelled

Alpine Canada has announced that the FIS has removed Lake Louise Ski Resort, AB from the upcoming season's calendar of events. Unfortunately, Lake Louise and Alpine Canada couldn't bring in enough advertising money to support the event.

This year's men's speed races were scheduled to take place on November 25-26. They were listed as 'to be confirmed' on the FIS's calendar release in May.

Lake Louise has also hosted women's speed races for years. Sogia Goggia, seen racing below, secured her third world cup victory at last year's race.

Therese Brisson, President & CEO for Alpine Canada said the following in last week's press release about the cancellation:

“Unfortunately, the economic model for the Lake Louise World Cup has been challenging the past few years,”

“We’ve been working with various stakeholders since last season to try to find solutions and despite some progress, we have run out of time to confirm the funding early enough to execute the event for the upcoming 2023-24 season.”

Brisson went on to share her disappointment, but committed that Alpine Canada will attempt to get a men's speed race back in Western Canada for the 2024-2025 season.

The press release does not state whether this means Alpine Canada will attempt to move the event to another western resort, or if it will attempt to bring the race back to Lake Louise.

Here's more from the press release:

"“We remain committed to a men’s speed event in Western Canada and will turn our attention to identifying solutions for the 2024-25 season and beyond.”

“Alpine Canada, together with our partners and stakeholders are committed to producing a race event that excites Canadians, grows the sport and fan base, delivers an amazing experience for athletes and fans, is commercially and environmentally sustainable, and supports a strong legacy for the sport and community today and into the future.”

Lake Louise has been a staple for both men and women on the World Cup circuit since the '90s.

Locals and tourists alike will surely miss having the World Cup come to town.
