Lady Gaga got away from the set of Joker: Folie à Deux long enough to trade her pigtails for a slicked-back bun at the 95th annual Academy Awards. On the red—ahem, the champagne—carpet, she wore a sheer Versace long-sleeve black gown with a diamond collar, styled with thick winged eyeliner and a scarlet lip. (The gown itself only just debuted at the Versace fall/winter ’23 show in Los Angeles on Thursday.)

The “Bad Romance” singer (and previous Best Actress nominee, for 2019’s A Star Is Born) is nominated for Best Song (again!) tonight with “Hold My Hand,” featured in the Best Picture nominee Top Gun: Maverick. Although earlier reports said Gaga turned down an offer to perform at the ceremony, a last-minute update broke shortly before the show stating otherwise: Gaga will indeed grace the stage.

Deadline originally reported, via Oscars cast director Glenn Weiss, that Gaga would not be performing, though she planned to attend the ceremony as a nominee. (Her schedule is currently packed with commitments to the DC sequel Folie à Deux, in which she’s set to star as Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.) Whether she would even show up—in Versace, no less—remained up in the air until hours before the carpet kicked off. (Rumors surrounding her RSVP status percolated online over the course of Oscars weekend; those speculations heated up further when the pop icon was ultimately a no-show at Friday night’s CAA Awards.)

Little is known so far about Gaga’s role in the impending Todd Phillips-directed film. (Even her character—all but guaranteed to be Harley Quinn, or some incarnation thereof—has yet to be confirmed.) On Valentine’s Day this year, Gaga and Phillips released a first-look image of Gaga and Phoenix in full character makeup, staring longingly—dare I call it maniacally—into each other’s eyes.

The film is set for an October 2024 release, giving Gaga more than enough time to practice a musical performance and an acceptance speech when the 97th annual Academy Awards roll around.
