Lady Gaga Wore a Fishbowl-Like Facial Shield at the MTV VMAs, Because, of Course She Did

When it comes to award shows — especially ones she's set to perform at — Lady Gaga goes all the way out. And not just with her outfit, but with her hair and makeup looks, too. Tonight's MTV Video Music Awards are no exception. The award-winning singer-songwriter debuted multiple bold looks that also happen to be super appropriate for the times. Two words: Facial. Coverings.

That's right: Mother Monster just turned protective facial gear into an iconic red carpet award show accessory the way only she really could. For her first look on the red carpet, she wore a clear fishbowl-esque facial shield, and for her second appearance of the evening, she wore a pink face mask contraption that, from what we can tell, is pretty heavy-duty, as it covered the majority of her face and head.

Then, lo and behold, she revealed her third face mask of the night — a spiked maroon number with actual horns attached — while taking the stage to accept her award for "Song of the Year" for her hit single "Rain on Me."

The singer's fourth face mask of the night was unveiled during her highly anticipated performance with Grande, which by the way, was just as incredible as expected. This one was all-black and featured red lights on the front, which offered a super-cool (and slightly freaky) glowing effect.

It didn't stop there, either. While accepting her award for "Artist of the Year," Gaga wore a sparkly silver mask that matched her dazzling metallic bodysuit. It was definitely one of the more lowkey looks of the night, but it stood out beautifully, nonetheless.

While we don't yet know who's responsible for making Gaga's facial coverings, we do know who did her gorgeous hair and makeup: hairstylist Frederic Aspiras and makeup artist Sarah Tanno, both of whom the singer's worked with for years now.

"Lady Gaga’s journey thru the years have inspired me to create hairstyles and color combinations that encapsulates this journey," Aspiras tells Allure. "She is tough, brave, a musical genius, a visionary and overall kind human being that believes in love and kindness in the world."

Aspiras dyed Gaga's hair an icy gray shade using color from Joico. Style-wise, he kept it long and ever-so-slightly wavy underneath her shield — a look he achieved with the new GHD Rise Hot Brush

"I knew I had to really deliver a look that would bring joy and creative inspiration to millions of people watching the show," he says.

To make her eyes stand out, Tanno gave the vocalist a dazzling shimmery pink smoky eye with thick, fluffy false lashes. She kept the rest of the face simple with nude-brown lips and bronzy blush to let the eyes stand out. Tanno used all products from Gaga's own brand, Haus Laboratories, to get the look.
