Lady Gaga Wore Elaborate Masks to the MTV VMAs 2020, and the Internet Lived for It

Lady Gaga took the public health directive to wear masks to a whole new level at the MTV VMAs 2020. The pop icon, who was nominated for several awards and also performed, wore several elaborate face-covering masks during the ceremony, and the internet lived for them.

She kicked things off on the VMAs “red carpet” with a Sandy-from-Spongebob-esque helmet. She then took the stage several times to accept awards, wearing stunning masks each time. She also wore a mask during her performance of “911,” “Rain on Me” (with Ariana Grande), and “Stupid Love.” Take a look at them for yourself, below. I’m particularly living for the one with the horns. “Be kind; masks up,” Gaga said at the end of her performance.

Here are some reactions online to Gaga’s incredible masks:

All the awards Gaga won at the MTV VMAs 2020 were for her and Ariana Grande’s song, “Rain on Me,” which is all about dancing through your pain. The two singers are now dear friends, but Gaga admits she was hesitant about befriending Grande after they recorded the song.

“She was so persistent,” Gaga told Zane Lowe of Apple Beats 1. “She would try over and over again to be friends with me. And I was too ashamed to hang out with her because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful. Eventually she called me on my shit. She was, like ‘You’re hiding.’ And I was like, ‘I am hiding. I’m totally hiding.’ And then this friendship blossomed.”

As for Grande’s take on the start of their friendship: “One time…I met a woman who knew pain the same way I did…who cried as much as I did, drank as much wine as I did, ate as much pasta as I did, and whose heart was bigger than her whole body.Sshe immediately felt like a sister to me,” Grande tweeted about her collaboration with Gaga back in May. “She then held my hand and invited me into the beautiful world of chromatica, and together we got to express how beautiful and healing it feels to mothafuckinnnn cry! I hope this makes u all feel as uplifted as it does for us both. I love you @ladygaga, u stunning superwoman!”
