Lady Gaga Matched Her Mermaid-Gray Hair to Her Dress at the MTV VMAs

The MTV VMAs 2020 were Sunday night (August 30), and while things certainly looked different from awards shows in the past—there was no traditional red carpet for one, and the show was happening across New York’s five boroughs—at least there’s one thing we can count on: Lady Gaga making headlines for her look.

The singer, who is performing at the show for the first time in seven years tonight, knows how to make an entrance, even in the midst of a pandemic. Riffing off of both the show’s Moon Man trophies and the fact that face coverings are the must-have accessory du jour, Gaga showed up in a full-on spacesuit-inspired getup, complete with a clear helmet. “I was wearing face shields before it was a thing,” she even joked on Instagram

Yes, the look—and the Technicolor one she wore to accept her award for best collab, with Ariana Grande—is instantly iconic, but the real scene stealer here is Gaga’s hair. The long silvery gray makes her look like a fashion witch from space, and we’re very into it. Gaga has rocked a plethora of hair colors. In addition to her signature platinum, she most recently had a pastel pink and a pretty “ocean blonde,” but gray is a look we haven’t seen from Mother Monster in nearly 10 years.

Gaga’s hairstylist, Frederic Aspiras, shared the inspiration for the look on Instagram. While he didn’t clarify whether it’s a wig—our guess is extensions are involved—he did shout out that he used Joico and GHD to style her hair.

He wrote: “Love is the inspiration. Bringing all the elements of earth, wind and fire. Lady Gaga’s journey thru the years have inspired me to create hairstyles and color combinations that encapsulates this journey. She is tough, brave, a musical genius, a visionary and overall kind human being that believes in love and kindness in the world.”

Now that’s some energy we could all use for the rest of 2020.
