Lady Gaga is no stranger to shedding her clothes for the camera—and this time, she’s taking her actor-fiance Taylor Kinney along for the ride.

The couple appears on the latest cover of V magazine (in a mirror selfie taken by Kinney) wearing nothing but a smattering of multi-colored paint.

But those paint smears aren’t just for show: They’re actually the result of Gaga and Kinney doing some “adult finger painting”—i.e., covering their bodies in paint and having sex on top of a canvas. Just the usual.

According to Gaga, who guest edited the issue, the X-rated artistry was originally Kinney’s idea. “Since we first met, Taylor’s been drawing and painting all over me,” she writes in her editor’s letter. “Years ago, when we were secretly living in San Diego and crashing on the floor of a beach shack, we never wore shoes. He told me he wanted to make love to me on a canvas.”

The lovebirds never actually got around to it—until recently, when Gaga had an idea. “I asked [Taylor] to collaborate with me on a project to raise money and awareness about mental illness, [and] he immediately brought my attention back to this idea.”

“We made love on the canvas on a Sunday in Chicago,” she continues. “We made love amidst chaos. We talked about shootings. We made love amidst terrorism. And we talked about how people’s hearts are also suffering all over the world as they watch and witness a swell of violence. We made love amidst violence.”

The painting that resulted is abstract and fairly Jackson Pollock in nature, with a base of purple and green and splashes of yellow and orangey-red.

“During tumultuous times, we hope everyone in the world will see this and be reminded to love each other wildly, generously, totally, colorfully, without fear and with compassionate hearts,” Gaga explains. “We made a galaxy of endless colors with only brief, black holes of emptiness that are then filled by each other.”

All the sales from Lady Gaga’s $50 V issue—of which there are 16 unique covers—will go towards Gaga’s Born This Way foundation, helping fund “cutting-edge, social-emotional intelligence research.” Readers can purchase a copy now exclusively at vmagazineshop.com.
