ORIGINAL STORY: August 6, 2020—

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s song “Rain on Me” is a joyous celebration of dancing through your pain, and the video is an extension of that. But prepping for the shoot wasn’t all fun and games, as evidenced by a new video Gaga uploaded to her Instagram on Thursday, August 6. (It’s an episode of her Gagavision series, which has offered behind-the-scenes looks into her career for years.)

Well, actually, it’s not that serious. Basically, Gaga accidentally scratched Grande in the eye as they were practicing choreography for the video, and what transpired afterwards is hilarious. Thankfully, we have it on tape.

So, here’s the breakdown of events: (1) Gaga realizes she scratched Grande, saying, “I shanked her with my nail by accident.” (2) Grande is low-key obsessed with the scratch, telling someone in the BTS clip, “Lady Gaga scratched my eye! It’s an honor! I hope it scars!” She later says, “I hope it stays there forever…. It looks hard! I feel like I was in an action movie.” (3) Gaga gets her hands on Neosporin and tries to apply it onto Grande’s face, which she playfully refuses. The whole exchange ends with Gaga chasing Grande around the rehearsal room with a bottle of Neosporin and wrestling her to the ground to apply it.

“I want it to stay!” Grande says, to which Gaga responds, “Listen to your mom!”

“Oh my God, you’re two days older than me!” Grande quips back.

I’ve never watched a video more times in a row. See it for yourself, below:

No word yet if the scratch left a scar—but we do know that doing “Rain on Me” turned Gaga and Grande into dear friends. Apparently, Gaga was apprehensive about befriending Grande at first. After they finished recording the song, Grande tried to spark a friendship with Gaga, but Gaga felt “too ashamed” to reciprocate.

“She was so persistent,” Gaga told Zane Lowe of Apple Beats 1. “She would try over and over again to be friends with me. And I was too ashamed to hang out with her because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful. Eventually she called me on my shit. She was, like ‘You’re hiding.’ And I was like, ‘I am hiding. I’m totally hiding.’ And then this friendship blossomed.”

Thank God it did. “Rain on Me” is a bonafide hit and earned Gaga and Grande several nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards. Fingers crossed we get a performance soon.
