The puffer jacket was invented by and for outdoor adventurers, but it has long since become a cold-weather staple. Eddie Bauer is credited with making the first one, and since then, outdoor and fashion brands alike have reinterpreted puffers in every way imaginable. But L.L.Bean is one of the brands doing it the best in 2024. Right now, one of its most versatile puffers is on sale for under $150.

The Packaway Hooded Puffer Jacket is now on sale for $149—a 25% discount on the original price of $199. It has a technical design ideal for outdoor adventures, but the styling is minimalistic enough to suit cold-weather commutes and backyard hangs without the extra poof. Stock is very limited in carbon blue, but Nordstrom currently has the black colorway in sizes between small and XXL.

This jacket features a recycled ripstop polyester shell, which is both durable and responsible. The insulation is also recycled and made by Primaloft, one of the leading companies for performance insulation fabrics. The synthetic fill includes Aerogel, Primaloft’s lightweight NASA-inspired insulator, and Primaloft Gold Luxe, the company’s warmest fill for the weight. That makes this jacket light but warm. The outer and insulation are made using recycled polyester.

L.L.Bean also included several trail-inspired details that make it suitable for cold-weather hikes. It zips up to the chin and features a hood, protecting the face from cold gusts. There’s also a zippered “Napoleon” chest pocket that’s ideal for stashing snacks or sunglasses and two hand pockets that zip as well.

Today, puffer jackets come in different weights and styles to suit different seasons and activities. On the lighter end, you’ll find jackets like Patagonia’s Nano puff, which weighs next to nothing and is packable. You’ll also find heavier styles like The North Face Nuptse jacket that features the full Michelin Man look. L.L.Bean’s Packaway puffer is on the lighter side, making it a good option for mobility, whether you’re traveling or hiking. As the name suggests, the Packaway jacket packs into its own pocket for easy storage.

Shoppers appreciated the lightweight insulation, with one writing that it was “light enough for warm days, warm enough for cold days.” Another wrote that it was “not too heavy or bulky,” finding that the jacket “is fairly warm and very light and thin.”

The jacket’s packability was a major selling point as well. One shopper wrote that it was “easy to stuff in a suitcase or backpack and doesn’t wrinkle much,” while another wrote that it “packs down small to fit in my overnight bag.” Multiple shoppers found that the jacket ran small, so it’s worth considering a size larger than normal, especially if you plan to wear it over a fleece or sweater.

Staying warm in unpredictable weather requires a lightweight but warm jacket, and L.L.Bean’s Packaway puffer fits the bill. Since the blue sold out so quickly, we’re expecting the black to do the same. So, if you’ve been looking for a perfect three-season jacket, make sure to grab your size before it’s gone for good.
