When Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell were presented with a unique opportunity to work together, they leaped at the chance — and the elder Russell was surprised by his reaction to the new experience.

The father-son duo was cast to play the same character at different ages for an upcoming Apple+ series titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is tied to the Godzilla and King Kong universe. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, Kurt, 72, explained, “We were being given this opportunity to play the same person, as opposed to the father and son, so we started hammering away at it and saying, ‘Let’s make this good!'”

Wyatt, 37, jumped in to add, “[Playing] father and son is like low-hanging fruit, and we’ve never been people, genetically, who have gone for low-hanging fruit. It’s just never been interesting [for me], it’s never been interesting in his career,” The Falcon and The Winter Solider star elucidated.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actor continued, “I suddenly found myself saying, ‘God, well, Wyatt’s gonna create this character, and I’m going to play him later on in life, so it’s gotta all make sense.” Kurt added, “And I suddenly realized I’ve watched him all his life, but I’ve never examined him. That was really interesting, because I started seeing things about him that I could feel resembled me.” The dad of four sweetly concluded, “And it was just, for me, a wonderful opportunity to get to work with Wyatt.”

Wyatt explained what drew him into the role and overall project, sharing, “The challenge of what [they] wanted to do was create a show that had something that went beyond just running from a monster. [The] challenge was to make you care about the characters and have real depth, so that was that was what we took on.” He added, “And it was fun to be able to do that. It was fun to be able to do it with my dad.”

These two clearly hold each other in high esteem! What a special experience it must be to not only share a career but to be able to work alongside one another in such a creative capacity.

While the Fast & Furious franchise star saw himself in his son more than ever while filming Monarch, Wyatt remarked that he’s had a same-but-different experience involving his 2-year-old son. The former ice hockey player mused, “I see in my own son, more than I see in myself, the physicality of my dad. Like, genes are recessive and traits are recessive and there’s certain things my son does where I’m like, ‘Oh my god! You’re just like my dad.'” We have to agree, genetics are quite the trip!

Kurt shares Wyatt with his longtime partner, fellow actress Goldie Hawn. He also has a son named Boston, 43, from his previous marriage, and Hawn’s eldest kids, actors Kate Hudson, 44, and Oliver Hudson, 47, also consider the esteemed movie star their dad.
