Baker Farms, a Georgia-based collard greens distributor, is recalling one production run of 16-ounce bags of Kroger-branded fresh collards. The bags have a dark blue label and a yellow “1-lb bag” symbol. The affected products have a UPC code of 11110-18171 and a best-by date of October 16, 2023. They also have a production code of 110093-387, which is visible just below the printed best-buy date.

While no reports of collard green-related illnesses have been reported yet, Baker Farms recommends that shoppers throw away or return the produce for a refund. The product was mostly distributed in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee, but the recall also impacts parts of Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.

Baker Farms launched this recall after officials with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture found a listeria issue during routine product testing. Since the recall announcement, Kroger has removed the remaining affected collards from shelves.

While exposure to Listeria monocytogenes may not be dangerous for young, healthy people, it still carries a risk for many consumers. According to the Food and Drug Administration, listeriosis is more likely to affect younger children, older folks, pregnant people and those with compromised immune systems. Short-term symptoms can include a high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiffness and abdominal pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact a health provider, especially if you’ve recently eaten a recalled item.
