Every time a celebrity hits the red carpet, you can guarantee with near certainty that they’re wearing extensions to bulk up their hair. Few products give your mane the oomph that it needs to sustain an entire night being photographed, but Kristin Cavallari was able to forgo the clip-ins in favor of a $24 thickening product on tonight’s Oscars red carpet.

Hairstylist Owen Gould gave Kristin’s hair a major dose of volume, prepping it with Ecru Marine Thickening Balm from roots to ends while damp. The product drastically thickens fine or thinning hair, while protecting it from heat damage with keratin amino acids, silk proteins, and algae extract. The paraben-free formula fully absorbs into the hair for added moisture, shine, and a weightless feel.

He then styled her hair using Volumizing Silk Mist ($24) from mid-shaft to ends.

“This was a key part of the look,” says Gould. “I then round brushed her hair using a medium-sized boar bristle brush.”

Next, he sectioned her hair, spraying each part with Sunlight Styling Spray ($23) to help increase her mane’s shine and hold. Finally, he curled her hair with a one and a half inch curling iron, making sure to leave the ends out for a looser and more relaxed wave.

“Once the texture was in her hair I used a pea sized amount of the Styling Balm ($26), rubbed together in my hands and raked through the ends of her hair for some shine and separation,” he added.
