Kristen Stewart Is Trying to Save the Planet—One Jean at a Time

The conversation around sustainability in fashion is more crucial than ever. From fast fashion brands to luxury fashion houses, companies are reevaluating how they can use more recycled or organic materials, as well as revamping their production processes to reduce waste. And consumers are more conscious about the issue than ever, too. Research shows that shoppers care about a brand’s environmental footprint and that they’re increasingly turning to vintage or consignment shops to cut down on waste. (Some believe the resale market might even supplant fast fashion in less than a decade.)

An easy way for us all to contribute to the green movement is, of course, to shop less and smarter. Investing in key pieces that one can re-wear over and over reduces frivolous consumption. One celebrity that knows the power of this is Kristen Stewart. Over the past few weeks, the actress has been spotted wearing the same pair of jeans for multiple outings. Her light-wash denim—with tears at the knee, thighs, and across the backside—are purposely distressed, fitting into Stewart’s grungy-chic aesthetic. She’s worn them everywhere, styling the jeans with a shrunken Thom Browne blazer at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, or with a cropped tee for an appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live in Los Angeles just yesterday.

Her fixation on the jeans is commendable, considering she has the means to buy a whole array of ripped jeans at this point—but why bother if her one trusty pair does the job? Stewart is making it clear that, with clever styling, you can constantly rotate a piece without it ever feeling stale or redundant. We’ve all made moves to reduce the amount of single-use plastics and plastic straws that we use. Why should we approach our wardrobe any differently?
