Kristen Stewart Just Wore Teeny Shorts with a Cropped Tuxedo at the 2022 Oscars

Kristen Stewart is making an unexpected fashion statement on the the 94th Academy Awards red carpet.

The Chanel ambassador and Spencer star eschewed conventional red carpet-wear and floor-length gowns for a cropped tuxedo with hot shorts from the French fashion house. The black set was paired was paired with a sheer white button-up–which she wore unbuttoned–and black pumps.

“We were teetering between pants and shorts,” Tara Swennen, Stewart's stylist of 17 years, told Harper's Bazaar. “But Kristen, being the fashion chameleon that she is, was like, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s go for shorts.’”

Stewart's fiancé, screenwriter Dylan Meyer, appeared alongside her in a dark brown suit with a white undershirt.

Throughout the promo tour for the Pablo Larraín-directed film, the Twilight alum (who earned her first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Actress) has opened up about stepping into Princess Diana's shoes for the psychological drama, which explores the late royal's fraught relationship with food, her estranged husband Prince Charles, and the British royal family.

"It's hard not to feel protective over [Princess Diana]," Stewart said in a November 2020 interview during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! "Everyone's perspective is different, and there's no way to get everything right ... what is fact in relation to personal experience." She added, "I was really young when she passed away. ... [Spencer] takes place over three days, and it's this really poetic, internal imagining of what that might have felt like, rather than giving new information."

Stewart's performance was also informed by her thorough research of the royal. "I've gotten through two and a half biographies, and I'm finishing all the material before I actually go make the movie," she had told InStyle before the movie was shot. "It's one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don't want to just play Diana—I want to know her implicitly. I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long."
