This Kraft Dinner hack has millions of TikTok views — but does it make it taste better?

I tested this viral TikTok hack for making perfect macaroni and cheese.

For many Canadians, Kraft Dinner is a household staple when it comes to quick and tasty meals at home. It's been called Canada's unofficial national dish — unsurprising when according to Heinz-Kraft, 1.7 million boxes are sold here in a week.

I'm typically of the mindset that if something ain't broke, don't fix it, but one viral TikTok hack has me reconsidering the simple KD recipe that we all know and love.

TikTok user Kayla Buhler shared a video on the social media app, sharing the latest way to cook the classic Canadian dish — and you're going to want to take notes.

KD hack: The process and recipe

While some TikTok recipes get a bad rep for not providing enough detail or instructions, this KD hack is pretty straightforward. In fact, it might be even simpler than the boxed instructions, since everything comes together at once in the pot.

To get started, simply combine all ingredients in a pot:

  • Two boxes of Kraft Dinner

  • 1 cup of milk

  • 3 cups of water

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • Shredded cheese

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Buhler notes that the mixture "looks so f—ing disgusting" to start, but it's worth it to trust the process. Once everything comes to a boil, you simmer everything for eight to 10 minutes, and you'll end up with a "beautiful" bowl of macaroni and cheese.

"I can never make Kraft Dinner the same," Buhler says as she cuts to the finished dish.

Does this hack make Kraft Dinner taste better?

Surprisingly, yes — and it transformed my regular box of KD into a gourmet-worthy meal.

I followed the instructions in the TikTok but halved the recipe to use just one box, and it still turned out perfectly. The texture of the sauce was definitely improved by the addition of fresh shredded cheese, and it had a richer, creamier taste.

The best part about this hack is that you really don't need much to vastly improve your boxed mac and cheese — just a little extra shredded cheese from whatever you happen to have on hand (I used Babybel).

The only downside that I could find to this recipe is that is requires a little more attention than the standard instructions. I'm not sure if it's because of the stainless steel pot I used or the nature of cooking everything together in one step, but I did notice that the noodles were sticking to the bottom of the pot than usual.

For that reason, I'd recommend that if you try this TikTok hack out you'll want to stay close to the stove while it's cooking and stir frequently. Otherwise, this easy, quick Kraft Dinner hack is a worthwhile upgrade to standard mac and cheese.
