Kohl’s Will Be Closed for Thanksgiving 2023

Kohl’s will once again shut its doors on Thanksgiving Day this year.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisc.-based company announced that it will close all outposts on Thursday, Nov. 23. Kohl’s operates more than 1,100 stores across 49 states. The announcement marks the fourth year in a row that the retailer will close its doors on the holiday, building on a tradition that began in 2020.

In 2019, the retailer opened stores beginning at 5 p.m. on the holiday.

Kohl’s stores will reopen on open Friday, Nov. 24, at 5 a.m. local time. Between NOv. 3 through Nov. 9, Kohl’s will offer a slew of deals through its Black Friday Early Access event. Kohl’s is also running two “Super Saturday” deal events on Nov. 11 and Nov. 18 and will run deals through the week leading up to Black Friday.

Before the pandemic, Thanksgiving had become synonymous with getting a head start on holiday gifting ahead of the Black Friday rush. However, an increasing number of nationwide chains made the decision to dim their lights or give their employees that day off amid the COVID-19 health crisis in 2020.

Since then, other chains such as Target, Walmart, Dicks’ Sporting Goods and Best Buy have opted to close their stores and give workers Turkey Day off. This year, Walmart announced that it will be closed for business on Thanksgiving this year. Target in 2021 announced a decision to close business for good on Thanksgiving every year. And REI Co-op said it will close its stores on Black Friday permanently.

The United States’ biggest mall owner, Simon Property Group, also announced in a release that it will keep most of its domestic properties closed on Nov. 23, or Thanksgiving Day this year.
