Koa Rothman's Survival Tips for Surfing the North Shore this Winter (Watch)

Winter's just around the corner. And that means the North Shore's legendary surf breaks will be pumping with perfect surf from Haleiwa to V-Land soon.

Koa Rothman, North Shore ripper and son of Eddie Rothman, is here to warn you about what to do, and what not to do if you try to surf his home breaks in his latest vlog.

He points out that while some of the rules apply everywhere, "A lot are specific here on North Shore. Things that apply here don't necessarily apply everywhere else in the world."

Here's the short version, but we advise watching the entire video for details.

DOs

#1- Listen to the lifeguards.

#2- Be respectful.

#3- Have the right equipment. Do research beforehand and be prepared.

#4- Know what the swell is doing.

#5- Stretch and warm up.

#6- Know your limits. If in doubt, don't go out.

#7- If you're a beginner, definitely take a surf lesson.

#8- Time your paddle outs.

#9. Take turns with the people you're surfing with.

#19- Clean up your trash.

DON'Ts

#1- If you're on the inside and someone's coming down the line, don't paddle where they're headed. Go deeper into the impact zone and take a set on the head if necessary.

#2- Don't paddle out around everyone and try to get a wave.

#3- Don't even try to surf Pipeline. It's not worth it.

#4-No snaking! Duh.

#5. Don't drop in. Unless they deserve it.

#6- Don't paddle for a wave and not go.

#7- Don't panic.

#8- Don't drive fast on Kenui Road (the street that runs parallel to Kamehameha Highway from Pipe to Sunset).
