Last week, England lost its longest-reigning monarch when Queen Elizabeth II died at 96. The following days have seen an outpouring of remembrance for the queen in timing with official mourning rites. Since the Royal Family has many homes across the U.K., it's only natural that mourners are wondering which will be her final resting place. While estates like Buckingham and Kensington Palaces are the best known, Balmoral was famously beloved by the queen, and she recently laid in state at Holyrood House, Queen Elizabeth's final resting place will be at St. George's Chapel, in Windsor.

Where is St. George's Chapel?
The chapel is located at Windsor Castle, the official royal residence in Berkshire county, about 20 miles away from Buckingham Palace to the west of London. It is located in the lower ward, or "bailey" of the castle.
What is St. George's Chapel famous for?
Most recently, St. George garnered publicity as the location for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in spring 2018. One year later, it played host to Princess Eugenie's wedding ceremony to Jack Brooksbank. On a more somber note, the funeral of Prince Philip, the queen's beloved husband, took place at the chapel in 2021.
When was it built?
St. George's boasts an extensive history; construction began in the 14th century by King Edward III as a religious college. It was renovated extensively in the 15th century and wasn't deemed complete until 1528, under the reign of Henry VIII. Several centuries later, Queen Victoria made renovations to the interior in memory of her late husband, Prince Albert.
What is the architectural style of the chapel?
The chapel is considered Gothic in style, though its many renovations over the years add various layers. It is most closely aligned with the Perpendicular Gothic style, dating to the late medieval period in England and exemplified by tall windows, wide arches, and horizontal transoms.
Will the funeral be there?
No. Queen Elizabeth's official state funeral took place at Westminster Abbey on the morning of Monday, September 19. However, a smaller "committal ceremony" will take place at St. George's before the Queen is interred.
Are any other royals buried there?
Yes—Henry VIII and Charles I are buried there, as well as, Queen Elizabeth's parents, King George VI and The Queen Mother, her sister, Princess Margaret, and her husband, Prince Philip.
