It's nearly been a year since 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II passed away. September 8 marks one year since her death, and the royal family is "still planning" how they want to honor the late monarch.

"William, Kate, and Charles are all still planning how they will commemorate the passing of the Queen. The woulds still feel fresh, and it's been hard for them to find a way for celebration that will match the gravitas the Queen exuded," an insider told Us Weekly. "On September 8 there will be an acknowledgement or event, [but] the details are still being ironed out."

The source also spilled that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will "likely not be in attendance" at any event planned by the other royals, which isn't a huge shock given the tension between them right now.

The anniversary may be particularly bittersweet for King Charles. The day will not only mark a year since his mother's passing, but it will also mark a year since his Ascension Day—the day the throne is passed to a new king or queen after the previous one has died.

Queen Elizabeth II would spend her Ascension Days privately at the Sandringham House, where her father King George VI died. As for the current reigning monarch, "Charles will follow in his mother's tradition and take the day with [Queen] Camilla to reflect in solitude."

Queen Elizabeth II ruled on the British throne for over 70 years, making her the longest reigning monarch in British history and the second longest reigning monarch in the world, right next to French King Louis XIV, who served for 72 years after taking the throne at only 4 years old. Queen Elizabeth's coronation took place in June 1953 when she was 27 years old, and she passed away at age 96 in 2022.
