You may have seen rapper Aminé’s performance of “Woodlawn & Burden” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in September. If you haven’t, you might want to — it’s probably the only time you’re going to see a live hip-hop performance from a floating hot air balloon.

Here are a few things you should know about the 26-year-old rising star. Born Adam Aminé Daniel, he hails from the Portland neighborhood of Woodlawn and is the son of Ethiopian and Eritrean parents. The New York Times described him as a “joyful rapper with an eye on politics,” while GQ said he is “one of popular music’s most commanding and eclectic new forces.”

As a scrappy, young college student he learned to be resourceful. When he couldn’t afford studio time in 2015, he recorded “Caroline” on his laptop. It became his breakthrough single, earning multi-platinum status and ultimately leading to his major label deal with Republic Records. The upbeat, flirtatious song’s video has racked up over 304 million YouTube views since it dropped in June 2016.

Aminé’s latest album “Limbo” was released in August 2020 and explores adulthood and fame underscored by trendy trap beats.

“I still don’t know what I’m doing, and that’s what I really wanted fans to know,” he told Vulture. “Because the idea of a celebrity, or a rapper, or whatever the hell it is, when you’re put on this pedestal, people expect you to know exactly what to say or to have the best advice. This album is for people to understand I’m literally a human.”
