By the time he ascended to the throne, King Charles was already a grandfather five times over.

The former Prince of Wales is the longest-serving British heir apparent, becoming heir apparent at the age of three upon the ascension of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Over the course of his record-breaking time as first in line for the throne, the royal welcomed two sons with Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry, and later became grandfather to five adorable children—three of whom will be part of the upcoming coronation. He is also step-grandfather to Queen Camilla's five grandchildren (his wife previously shared that her grandchildren "absolutely adore him").

In a 2013 interview with The Telegraph, King Charles opened up about being a grandparent, saying, "It's a different part of your life." He added, "The great thing is to encourage them. Show them things to take their interest ... It is very important to create a bond when they are very young."

Ahead of King Charles's coronation weekend, here's a rundown of his five grandchildren.

The five-year-old has begun attending major royal engagements over the past year, including the royal family's holiday celebrations and Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, 2019, a year after his parents Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex tied the knot. He made his first public appearance two days after his birth, when Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan stepped out with their son as a family-of-three at Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace and an Archewell spokesperson previously confirmed to BAZAAR.com that Duchess Meghan, Archie, and his sister Lilibet will remain in California as Harry travels to the coronation alone. BAZAAR understands that Archie's fourth birthday, which is the same day as the coronation, has influenced Meghan's decision to stay home.

Princess Lilibet

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, (nicknamed "Lili") was born on June 4, 2021, in Santa Barbara, California. Her birth followed Harry and Meghan's move to Montecito, where the royal couple and their children currently reside as a family-of-four.

Lili first met her great-grandmother and namesake, Queen Elizabeth, at one years old, as she was born after the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. The infant also celebrated her first birthday during her first visit to the U.K., as the couple were in the country for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
