What to know before hiring a roofer to repair storm damage

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Wednesday night’s storms brought hail and high winds, damaging houses and ripping holes in roofs. Cleanup continues, and many are looking to hire a contractor to fix home damage.

Chrissy Boyd with Yellowhammer Roofing said roof damage is very common when tornados and other severe weather hits, and you should be careful when hiring someone to fix it.

“Wind can lift up the shingles,” Boyd said. “The shingles can break and separate from the nails.”

Boyd said it is a good idea to check your home for damage after a severe storm.

“If you notice dark spots showing up on your sheetrock or anything like that on your ceiling, that’s going to be an indicator that you’ve got a leak,” Boyd said. “It’s probably the best indicator.”

At that point, you need to call a roofer, but Boyd warns there are steps you should take before you hire one.

“There’s widespread damage in our area, and you can expect to see inexperienced contractors and out-of-towners looking for work,” Boyd said.

Look up the contactor you might hire. Read Google reviews and check the company’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation. You can also ask friends and family to recommend a contractor they’ve used, so you can find a trustworthy business.

“We want to make sure we’re going to give them a roof that’s going to last for many years to come,” Boyd said.

When inspectors come out to your home, Boyd said they will look for wind and hail damage.

“Our inspectors will look around the property,” Boyd said. “They’re going to look for any damage on soft metals. They are looking at gutters and downspouts. They’ll also look on your roof for vents and things like that.”
