After initially delayed due to the pandemic, the reboot of the beloved teen drama “Gossip Girl” is making its debut next month on HBO Max.

The reboot takes place nine years after the original show ended and follows a new crop of teenagers who are dealing with the reemergence of the anonymous blog as social media plays a larger role in their lives.

More from WWD

The original show was one of the most popular — and fashionable — series in the late Aughts and early 2010s, with then-up-and-coming actresses Leighton Meester and Blake Lively starting their careers with their iconic roles as Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodson, respectively.

Ahead of next month’s premiere, WWD looks at what to expect from the “Gossip Girl” reboot, including the new cast and how the show is different than its predecessor. Read on for more.

When is the “Gossip Girl” reboot debuting?

The “Gossip Girl” reboot is slated to premiere on July 8 on HBO Max. The show was originally set to premiere last spring, but was delayed because of the pandemic.

What is the “Gossip Girl” reboot about?

The “Gossip Girl” reboot takes place nine years after the original series ended with a new cast of characters. According to HBO Max, the reboot “takes us back to the Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark.” The new show will also cover how social media plays a large role in the characters’ lives.

The show is based on the best-selling novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original “Gossip Girl” show, which aired on the CW from 2007 to 2012.

Who is cast in the “Gossip Girl” reboot?

The reboot has cast several up-and-coming actors and actresses, including Emily Alyn Lind, Jordan Alexander, Thomas Doherty, Eli Brown, Evan Mock, Whitney Peak, Zion Moreno and Savannah Lee Smith. Former Rookie Magazine editor-in-chief and actress Tavi Gevinson will also be in the reboot.

Will any former “Gossip Girl” cast members return?

The original show’s cast, including Meester, Lively, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford, have not confirmed involvement in the reboot. The show’s original narrator, Kristen Bell, however, is back to narrate the reboot. Bell was the original voice of the titular “Gossip Girl” and served as the show’s narrator.

What will the reboot’s fashion look like?

Eric Daman, the original show’s costume designer, is back for the reboot. Daman is keeping the same high-fashion ethos for the reboot — having the characters dress in array of designer brands like Fendi, Burberry, JW Anderson, Off White and Staud, to name a few — but the reboot’s style will be more contemporary and street style-inspired.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Daman stated he looked to influencers, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber and the streets of East Village for inspiration to curate the over 200 costumes for each episode. He also stated that the reboot’s costumes will at times pay homage to the style of the original show.

How many episodes will the “Gossip Girl” reboot include?

The reboot includes 10 hourlong episodes.
