What to Know About "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" Netflix Series

The wait is almost over.

We’ve been itching with anticipation ever since the news of Netflix's Sabrina the Teenage Witch revival broke way back in 2017. Luckily, the wait for the reboot, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is coming to a close: On October 26, fans will finally get to step into Sabrina Spellman’s witchy world with 10 episodes debuting on the streaming service that day. The series’s creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, has already revealed that the show will be quite different from the original ‘90s show starring Melissa Joan Hart, which ran from 1996-2003. So what will it be like? Here's all the knowledge we've picked up on the buzzy Sabrina revival.

The Ever-Stylish Kiernan Shipka Will Play the Lead.

In January 2018, Netflix announced that Kiernan Shipka would take on the titular role of Sabrina, the half-witch, half-mortal. The show will follow Sabrina as she comes to terms with her witchy identity and the evil forces that threaten no only her, but also the human world. Kiernan is best known for playing Sally Draper on the hit period drama Mad Men and for her bold, playful style. "This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own," Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement reported by *The Hollywood Reporter when the casting was announced.

Netflix Already Ordered Two Seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed in December 2017 that Netflix greenlit not one, but two 10-episode seasons of the show, which they planned to film back-to-back. Um, yay.

The Reboot Has An All-New Name.

This may be a reboot, but the upcoming Sabrina series will have a totally different name from the last one: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This may not be the first time you’ve heard that title, though: The new show gets its name from the existing Archie comics series written by Roberto (who also created Riverdale.

And the Show Has a Very Different Vibe.

Unlike the original sitcom, Roberto's version of Sabrina will take on a much darker tone. Entertainment Weekly previously reported that the new show "reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and — of course — witchcraft." Scared yet?

Salem and Harvey Will Be Back.

Earlier this year, the Riverdale creator tweeted a photo of a black kitty resembling Salem, the famous talking cat from the original. But instead of using a puppet to play Salem (as was the case with the ‘90s show), this time around they hired an actual cat for the part of the feisty feline — who is actually a witch stuck in a cat's body, a fate that was punishment for attempting to taking over the world.

Salem isn’t the only favorite character returning, either. Sabrina's love interest from the OG, Harvey Kinkle, will also be back, this time played by Disney Channel alum. According to TV Line, Ross's character is described as being "the prince charming of this dark fairy tale” and “the son of a coal miner, a dreamboat and a dreamer, completely unaware of the dark forces conspiring to keep him and Sabrina apart.”

There Will Be A Number Of New Characters.

In addition to the characters we know and love (which also includes Sabrina's two quirky aunts), we’ll see plenty of new faces. Among them, according to TV Line and Deadline: Doctor Who's Michelle Gomez as Sabrina’s teacher, Mary Wardell; Vampire Diaries's Jaz Sinclair in the part of Sabrina's best friend Rosalind Walker; and Chance Perdomo as her warlock cousin and partner-in-crime, Ambrose Spellman.

There Will Be An Episode Inspired by The Exorcist.

You might have to sleep with the lights on for a few nights after watching: Roberto recently told Entertainment Weekly that one episode of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be based around The Exorcist, a classic '70s horror movie that centers on the potentially true story of a teenage girl being possessed by a demon. "I love The Exorcist,” Roberto told EW. “It’s one of my favorite movies. We’re doing an homage to that.”

There Won't Be a Riverdale Crossover Just Yet.

Sabrina was originally reported as a Riverdale spin-off slated to air on CW, which is also home to Riverdale. But Netflix ultimately picked up the show, and there has yet to be any news of a crossover. Considering both shows have the same creator, though, this could change. Keep your fingers crossed.

The Original Sabrina Supports the Revival.

Melissa Joan Hart, who played Sabrina in the original series, is all for this one one. "I think they’re doing it in a smart way—change it up, don’t make it the same," the she told Digital Spy in February. "If you’re going to do the same show, it probably would fall on its face, but I think what they’re doing is probably the smartest way to reboot something."
