Beyoncé is one of the most famous women in the world, so it’s not surprising that her children were stars before they were even born. When she was pregnant with her first child, daughter Blue Ivy, Beyoncé let the world know by announcing it during the MTV Movie Awards in August 2011, unsnapping her jacket after a performance of “Love on Top” to reveal her growing baby bump. At the time, the announcement broke Twitter’s record for most tweets per second for a single event. Feverish speculation about the baby’s name became a hot topic for the next four months, until Beyoncé revealed that her little one was called Blue Ivy.

Five years later, Beyoncé nearly broke the internet again by surprising fans with an Instagram post announcing that she and husband Jay-Z were expecting twins. “We have been blessed two times over,” she wrote at the time, alongside a photo of herself wearing a veil and cradling her stomach. “We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.” The snap became the most liked Instagram post of 2017, garnering more than 10 million likes.

While the Carters are now a happy family of five, Beyoncé has been candid about the fact that she struggled with fertility issues before welcoming Blue Ivy. In her 2013 documentary, Life Is But a Dream, she revealed that she suffered a miscarriage in 2011. She later hinted that she’d had at least one more pregnancy loss. “Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else,” she told Elle in 2019. “Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are still fiercely private about their family, but as their kids get older, they’ve given fans more glimpses of their famous offspring. Keep reading for everything to know about Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s children.

At what age did Beyoncé give birth to Blue Ivy?

Beyoncé was 31 when she gave birth to her eldest child, Blue Ivy. “I felt very maternal around eight months,” she recalled to Vogue in 2013. “And I thought I couldn’t become any more until I saw the baby. … But it happened during my labor because I had a very strong connection with my child. I felt like when I was having contractions, I envisioned my child pushing through a very heavy door. And I imagined this tiny infant doing all the work, so I couldn’t think about my own pain. … We were talking. I know it sounds crazy, but I felt a communication.”

Some conspiracy theorists have speculated over the years that Beyoncé welcomed her children via surrogate, but she gave birth to all of them. She initially shut down speculation about Blue Ivy’s birth in the 2013 documentary Life Is But a Dream, which included footage of Beyoncé holding her pregnant belly. "There's a stupid rumor. The most ridiculous rumor I think I've ever had about me,” she recalled in the film. “It's crazy. To think I would be that vain—I respect mothers and women so much and to be able to experience bringing a child into this world, if you're lucky and fortunate enough to experience that, I would never, ever take that for granted. It's the most powerful thing you can do. Especially after losing a child, the pain and trauma from that just makes it mean so much more to get an opportunity to bring life into the world.”

In 2017, Beyoncé performed at the Grammys while pregnant with Rumi and Sir. She was scheduled to headline Coachella that year but rescheduled to 2018 because of her pregnancy.
