After seeing Kit Harington embody Jon Snow on Game of Thrones for six seasons, we can’t imagine anyone else in the role. It turns out that the showrunners couldn’t either – especially after seeing Kit with a black eye at his audition for the part.

I’d been in a fight the night before,” Harington told W Magazine, during a video interview with Lynn Hirschberg. “I’d got in this fight with this guy in McDonald’s.” Kit explained that when he entered the McDonald’s with a girl he was seeing at the time, they realized there were no available tables and asked to sit down at a booth with another couple. The other couple agreed, but things (unfortunately) didn’t go as planned.

Right after they sat down, the man they were sitting next to started saying rude things to the girl Kit was with. They then mutually decided to finish their food and leave right after, since they didn’t want to start trouble – until the man called the girl, according to Kit (who had trouble remembering the exact statement), “an ugly pig or worse.” At this point, Kit rose from his seat, told the man that he could not call his companion that, and asked him to stand for a fight (which is something he’d never done before).

And of course he’d been sat down the whole time, so he got up and he just kept going, revealed Harington. “And then I realized that I had to, at that point, throw the first punch – otherwise I’d look like a complete wimp. And I got battered.” In typical Stark fashion, Kit Harington put his loved one first (and sadly paid the price). Jon Snow would be so proud.

Though we imagine the fight wasn’t pleasant in the moment, it seems that Kit’s McDonald’s fight did pay off. “So then I went to the Jon Snow audition with a black eye,” Kit stated, “[W]hich I think that man who punched me in the face may have helped me get the job, so if you’re watching, thank you.

To the man who gave Kit Harington a black eye: We’d like to thank you for also giving us our Jon Snow.
