Kirsten Dunst Is Game for Another Bring It On Sequel

Ask film scholars for their idea of a perfect movie, and they’re likely to name-check Rashomon or Citizen Kane. No offense to those self-evident masterpieces, but I’m here to tell you that there is actually only one perfect movie, and it is Bring It On.

The bitingly witty SoCal-set cheerleading romp has given us inestimable gifts, from a mainstream explanation of cultural appropriation to the song “Hey Mickey” to the popularization of the term “spanky pants.” Many of the fans who loved the original 2000 film, though, might not be aware that it spawned five—yes, five—sequels. (Hayden Panettiere was in one of them. Show her some respect!)

Ranging from a disappointing 8 to 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequels are far from critically adored, but any devoted student of the Bring It On cinematic universe can attest that they only get more enjoyable. As the series stretches on, it gains exponential camp factor; the films mostly follow the same formula (cheerleader rivalries, boy drama, billowing clouds of sprayed hair, cringey punch lines), but it’s one that works, especially accompanied by a glass or four of wine.

Now, original star Kirsten Dunst is lending her support to a possible seventh installment, saying on The Kelly Clarkson Show, “If they wanted to make another movie, I would make another movie. It would be so fun!”

This admission was brought on by the fact that she and Bring It On costar Gabrielle Union appeared in the same Rodarte campaign, although Dunst says it wasn’t planned. “I had no idea that Gabrielle was in it too, and then it became, like, this whole Bring It On thing,” Dunst told Clarkson. Union herself has joined in Twitter conversations about what a return to the franchise would ideally look like for her, making it two Bring It On stars who seem on board.

While Dunst and Union announcing their participation in a seventh Bring It On installment via a Rodarte campaign would be perfection, Dunst’s support for a possible reboot is enough. In these troubled times, don’t we deserve one nice thing?
