Kingmakers Includes a Hilarious Twist On Medieval Warfare

You’ve seen the standard trailer for medieval games. They all start with an epic, sweeping shot of a large landscape, with thousands of soldiers running at each other on horseback. They’ve got their swords and spears ready, mortars reigning fire everywhere, and then something weird happens - a car rams through all of them. Wait, that’s not normal.

That’s not where the fun stops. Suddenly, soldiers clad in medieval are firing gunshots into each other, using a bolt-action shotgun to take down horses. That’s the twist of Kingmakers, an upcoming war game that combines conventional strategy elements with third-person shooting.

The trailer for the game went viral on X/Twitter as people were amused at the game’s concept. You see, the first twenty seconds of the trailer look like a standard historical strategy game, and then the twist occurs. Watch the trailer here:

Players will be traveling back five hundred years to change the course of history with guns and grenades. They can join the battlefield alone or with friends in co-op. The battlefield includes thousands of soldiers with a “next-gen multi-threaded AI” controlling their actions.

As for your arsenal, the game will let you use assault rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, armored SUVs, bikes, attack helos, and even air strikes. Like other strategy games, players will be able to swap between combat and issuing orders to their troops in real-time.

Here is the official description of the game:

Go back in time to a war-torn medieval era with a vast arsenal of modern weapons, change the course of history, and save the future in this epic action/strategy sandbox. Build your kingdom, grab a gun, and lead an army of thousands into massive, real-time simulated battles — solo or in co-op.

The game is being developed by Redemption Road Games who, as you’ve probably guessed, released Road Redemption, the spiritual successor to Road Rash. The team has also released Defy Gravity, a well-received puzzle platformer on Steam.

Kingmakers will be released later in 2024 on PC (Steam).
