More than a decade on from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, there’s a sequel on the ascendancy. It’s called Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and it’s just got a stunning trailer.

Directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set in a world ruled by primates. They can properly talk now, too.

Set several generations following Caesar’s reign, apes are now the dominant species on Earth, and humans several rungs below them on the ladder, relegated to wearing loincloths and not showering. At one point we see them being hunted by apes on horseback.

According to Universal’s synopsis: “As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”

There’s no Andy Serkis (his Caesar character is long gone), but you can spot glimpses of The Witcher’s Freya Allan in the trailer. The film also features IT’s Owen Teague and Fargo’s William H. Macy.

Hopefully the filmmakers trust you'll be able to keep up, unlike The Witcher producer who slammed audience attention spans.
