King Princess Redefines the Louche Lounge Singer Look in Her New Video

King Princess loves to play a character. Just take her music video for “Cheap Queen” from earlier this summer, where she watched herself on TV playing a wide range of different roles, from the reality show contestant in the midst of a breakdown, to a Kidz Bop-esque child popstar shilling their new CD.

But in her new “Prophet” video, directed by artist Cody Critcheloe (who also makes music as SSION), King Princess takes this shape-shifting persona to an even more surreal realm. Here, King Princess starts as a football player charging the field—customized uniform included—after which she inexplicably then turns into a lounge singer, looking completely nonchalant as she takes the stage in a floral shirt with a blazer hanging off her shoulder. Even though she eventually transforms into a red velvet dessert at the end of the visual, it’s her revival of that bygone louche club singer aesthetic that stylistically takes the cake. So to speak.
