King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were in London today to celebrate the founding of the Royal Hospital by King Charles II in 1692. Known as Founder's Day or Oak Apple Day, the festivities have taken place annually since its opening, and is attended by Chelsea Pensioners, retired soldiers of the British Army.

"Honoured to have His Majesty the King of the Belgians with us on this special day. A celebration of resilience, unity, and the rich history of Royal Hospital Chelsea," the Chelsea Pensioners tweeted. King Philippe was the reviewing officer at the parade, an honorary position usually undertaken by a member of the British royal family.

Queen Mathilde looked lovely in a white dress with a green pattern, and accessorized with a headpiece by Maiseon Fabienne Delvigne. The "Chelsea" headpiece, the Belgian milliner shared on Twitter, is "delicately made of banana fibers, with feathers." Both King Philippe and Queen Mathilde accessorized with oak leaves.

During the event, Philippe gave a speech, where he spoke about his heritage linking the British and Belgian royal families, and the sacrifices made by British soldiers during World War I and World War II. He also discussed the war in Ukraine, saying, "In these turbulent times, I would also like to spare a special thought for the Ukrainian soldiers who are heroically defending their country, at the cost of their lives. I am proud that together, in the name of respect for international law, both our nations are part of a coalition to help them succeed."

He ended by quoting William Gladstone, "because it fills me with hope," saying "We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace."

A member of the British royal family has historically attended the Founder's Day Parade each year; Queen Elizabeth went numerous times over her reign.

Last year, Sir Timothy Laurence attended Founder's Day as the Reviewing Officer, and in 2021, Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, attended with his wife, the Duchess of Gloucester.
