King Charles Releases Statement on the Death of His Mother, Queen Elizabeth

In what has been a seismic and somber day in the UK, The King has paid tribute to his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in a statement via Buckingham Palace.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of great sadness for me and all members of my family," the statement reads. It continues: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt through the country, the Reals, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."

In February of 2022, then-Prince Charles paid tribute to the Queen in statement to celebrate her platinum Jubilee—an unprecedented 70 years on the throne—calling attention to her achievement of lifelong service as well as her "devotion to the welfare of all her people."

The much-beloved queen passed away at the age 96 on Thursday, September 8, 2022 in Balmoral. The news of Queen Elizabeth's passing was announced in a statement from Buckingham Palace that read:

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Earlier this morning, the palace put out a worrying statement about the queen's health, indicating that not only had family members been notified, but that she would remain at Balmoral where she remained comfortably under medical supervision.

However, concerns for her health had be a regular anxiety for the Royal Family and the palace. Earlier this week she was forced to postpone her Privy Council meeting after doctors recommended she rest, which occurred only a day after appointing her 15th prime minister from Balmoral. Her Majesty was also diagnosed with COVID-19 in February of this year. She reportedly experienced mild symptoms, and, at the time, was able to carry on with light duties.

In recent months, it was announced that the Queen wished that when Charles (who hasn't yet announced is regnal name) succeeded the throne, his wife, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall would be called Queen.

After a 70 year reign, which was celebrated with the Diamond Jubilee in June, this is a monumental moment of transition for both the royal family and the commonwealth. See more reactions and tributes to the Queen on her passing from members of the royal family, here.
