King Charles arrived in France on Wednesday for a three-day state visit designed to revive the two nations’ bilateral connection after the fallout from Brexit. The British monarch was welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron with a lavish banquet at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday night. More than 150 A-listers were seated at one 197-foot-long “king’s table” inside the spectacular 17th-century palace. The guest list included celebrities such as Mick Jagger and Hugh Grant, as well as entrepreneurs, athletes, and politicians. Arnault was also present, as reported by The Guardian.
The 74-year-old businessman has been the chairman and CEO of LVMH since 1989. Over the past three decades, he has expanded the French company into the successful luxury conglomerate that it is today. Arnault’s 75-brand empire is now valued at $500 billion, while his personal fortune totals roughly $170 billion. He is currently the second-richest person in the world, behind Elon Musk and his $241 billion. For comparison’s sake, the king’s personal net worth is estimated at $2.3 billion (£1.8 billion).
The monarch’s trip follows a Franco-British summit that was held earlier this year in a bid to mend relations between the two countries. Repairing the alliance between Britain and France may result in significant mutual benefits, from unlocking trade and investment to boosting economic growth. (Not that Arnault needs any help with that.) King Charles did his part to bolster the bond by making a poignant toast at the banquet.
“I would like, if you would allow me, to raise a toast to President and Madame Macron and to the French people, as well as to our entente cordiale—a sustainable alliance,” the royal said. “Whatever lies ahead, may it endure, faithful and constant, for centuries to come.”
Macron’s toast was equally positive.
“Despite Brexit and because our ties are so old, I know that we will continue to write together part of our continent’s history,” he added.
We’ll have to wait and see what the king of luxury has to say.
