'Kind of what it should be: a community-style event': Residents celebrate Independence Day

The weather seemed to go out of its way to cooperate with local Fourth of July celebrations on Monday.

On U.S. 30 near Crestline, the road was wet from a recent rainfall. But in the village's downtown, no rain fell as hundreds gathered for the fourth annual Crestline Freedom Festival.

A portion of Seltzer Street near the gazebo was closed to traffic, and hundreds gathered for live music, food, games, contests and a foam pit for children.

In Bucyrus, the weather was "perfection" for the Bucyrus Kiwanis Club's annual fireworks display, which started at 10 p.m., said Doug Foght, who organizes the event for the club each year.

"Everybody was like, ‘Oh, we’re not gonna be able to,’" Foght said shortly before 9 p.m., as spectators filled the Crawford County Fairgrounds. "I was like, ‘Guys, trust me: It will be fine. I’ve been keeping an eye on the weather.’ It will clear off by midafternoon and we’ll have a show just like we always do. ... As always, with God’s grace we have wonderful weather and we’ll have a wonderful fireworks show, as always."

Several food vendors were at the fairgrounds ahead of the show, and Gospel Baptist Church of Galion was offering hot dogs and hospitality. “Kind of what it should be: a community-style event. People are walking around and talking right now,” Foght said.

Foght said fundraising for next year’s show, which he hopes to move downtown, is going “really, really” well. "We’re well on our way," he said.

"We’re blessed, Bucyrus is. We’re blessed in Crawford County, really. A lot of people don’t realize, this is a very generous county that we live in," Foght said.
